About Alternify
An independent directory of software alternatives.
What this site is for
Software subscriptions accumulate quietly. A design tool here, a note app there, a project tracker your team stopped using two quarters ago — each one small enough to ignore, together large enough to matter.
Alternify exists to answer one narrow question well: for a given paid tool, what else could do this job, and what would it cost? Search a tool you pay for and the site shows open-source, free-tier, and cheaper commercial replacements, with what each one actually gives you and where it falls short.
Who runs it
Alternify is built and maintained by a single independent developer, publishing as BlackPaw21. It is not a company, and it is not backed by any of the vendors listed on it.
The whole catalogue is published as one public file, /data/tools.json, so any listing can be checked against what the site shows. Records verified against a provider page carry the source URL and the date it was checked.
How entries are researched
The catalogue currently holds 6,324 tools across 145 categories. It is a broad discovery dataset, not a claim that every record has received hands-on testing. Records that qualify as editorial landing pages must meet a stricter completeness threshold:
- Enough original context: a substantive product description, multiple features, and multiple product-specific trade-offs.
- Explicit alternatives: recommendations come from that product's own curated relationship list, not every reverse reference or category neighbour.
- Cautious pricing labels: free and freemium labels describe recorded pricing, not a guarantee; verify limits and costs with the provider.
- Progressive publishing: incomplete catalogue records stay searchable on the site, but do not get a page of their own until they meet the threshold.
What this site is not
Rankings are not for sale. No vendor has paid for placement, position, or a kinder description, and no listing has been added or removed in exchange for money.
Alternify is also not a review site. It does not score tools out of ten or claim hands-on testing of all 6,324 entries. It is a directory: it tells you what exists, what it costs, and what the trade-off is, so you can go and judge for yourself.
How it is funded
The site is free, requires no account, and is supported by readers who buy me a coffee. Alternify may also show clearly labelled advertising on selected editorial and interactive pages.
Advertising is not placed on automatically generated directory pages and never influences which tools are listed or how they are ordered. See the Privacy Policy for the third parties involved and how to opt out of personalised ads.
Corrections
Wrong price, dead project, a better alternative that should be listed? Corrections are genuinely welcome — see the contact page.
